A useful provisional patent application example shows how the written description, figures, terminology, operation, and alternatives work together to explain an invention.

The USPTO says a provisional filing needs a written description complying with 35 U.S.C. §112(a). Formal claims are not required, but that does not make the technical disclosure optional.

The fictional invention

A modular self-watering planter insert.

A removable insert sits inside a conventional planter. A lower reservoir stores water, a replaceable wick moves water toward the growing medium, an overflow path limits the water level, and an optional sensor pod reports reservoir status.

This invention is intentionally easy to visualize. It is not based on a customer, product, or confidential invention.

It identifies components, relationships, operation, and one sensor arrangement. It still does not prove legal sufficiency; the complete disclosure and actual invention control.
